Concise update on Chinese millet prices, recent weather, supply conditions, Ukraine logistics risks and a 3-day price outlook for CN millet exports.

Prices

Chinese millet prices in Beijing have firmed slightly, with both organic and conventional FOB quotations in China ticking higher in early November, while Ukrainian values remain broadly stable amid ongoing Black Sea export disruptions.

The market is navigating between generally comfortable coarse-grain supply in China, improving harvest weather and persistent logistics risks in the Black Sea that cap downside for Black Sea-origin millet. Domestic Chinese grain harvest progress and mild North China weather support steady supply, but exporters report only modest spot liquidity and cautious overseas demand. Against this backdrop, CN millet prices are moving in a narrow upward channel, with buyers focusing on short-covering rather than longer-term forward commitments.

FOB Beijing quotations for hulled yellow millet have moved slightly higher compared with late October. Organic millet kernels (99.90% purity, CN origin, FOB Beijing) are currently indicated at 0.99 EUR/kg FOB, up from 0.97 EUR/kg on 4 November. Conventional millet kernels (99.95% purity, CN origin, FOB Beijing) are quoted at 0.89 EUR/kg FOB, versus 0.88 EUR/kg on the same date.

Ukrainian millet prices in Odesa show a mixed but overall steady picture. Hulled yellow millet seeds (FOB Odesa) are indicated at 0.337 EUR/kg FOB, slightly above the previous 0.327 EUR/kg, while inshell yellow millet seeds (98% purity, FCA Odesa) are stable at 0.36 EUR/kg FCA. Organic hulled kernels (99% purity, FCA Odesa) remain unchanged at 1.20 EUR/kg FCA, and conventional hulled kernels (98% purity, FCA Odesa) hold at 0.62 EUR/kg FCA.

Supply & Demand

China is on track for a bumper 2026 grain harvest, with authorities highlighting expanded autumn crop area and higher yields across major cereals, particularly corn. This underpins abundant domestic coarse-grain supply and comfortable feed availability, indirectly tempering upside for minor grains like millet despite niche demand.

Recent monitoring from Beijing municipal grain authorities notes that corn is entering concentrated marketing with signs of price basing as new-crop supply expands and earlier weather-related delays ease in the Northeast and North China Plain. This suggests overall feed grain buyers have alternatives, limiting aggressive bidding for millet and reinforcing its role as a specialty rather than staple feed grain in rations.

On the export side, international millet price discovery remains challenging, with a wide range of global offer levels reported on specialized platforms and relatively illiquid spot trade. Against this backdrop, competitive CN FOB levels near 0.89–0.99 EUR/kg keep Chinese origin attractive for price-sensitive destinations, especially where buyers can consolidate mixed container loads with other small grains.

Ukraine remains a key alternative supplier for certain markets, but continued Russian attacks on Black Sea logistics and port infrastructure have sharply reduced deep-water traffic, forcing greater reliance on higher-cost Danube and overland routes. While millet is a small share of Ukraine’s grain basket, these constraints support a floor under Odesa FCA and FOB values, with sellers reluctant to discount further amid elevated transport and insurance costs.

Weather & Crop Conditions (CN Focus)

Recent agricultural weather bulletins for early November report generally favorable conditions across North China, with adequate soil moisture and good sunshine supporting the tail end of autumn harvest operations and winter cereal sowing.

National climate guidance for mid-to-late November indicates that most of China will see near- to above-normal temperatures, with only central Tibet expected to be cooler than average. For key millet areas in North China, this pattern implies minimal weather-related stress on remaining field operations or storage logistics.

Two forecast cold-air events in mid- and late November are expected to be of moderate to weak intensity and mainly affect northern and western border regions, with limited impact on harvested millet stocks or quality. Overall, weather is currently a neutral to slightly supportive factor for supply stability rather than a bullish driver.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

Key market drivers governing current physical contracts across Beijing, Tianjin, and European import terminals:

  • Harvest and stocks:With China emphasizing yield gains and technology adoption in cereals and reporting over 80% completion of autumn grain harvest nationally by early November, domestic grain availability appears ample. Millet benefits indirectly through reduced substitution pressure and stable local consumption.
  • Competing grains:Corn prices in northern China show signs of bottoming, as new-crop supply increases and prior weather disruptions fade. This caps upward momentum for millet in feed channels, though millet retains a premium in food and birdseed segments.
  • Black Sea logistics:Ukrainian grain exports face ongoing disruptions from attacks on Black Sea ports and infrastructure, sharply cutting port calls and pushing more volume through constrained alternative routes. This sustains a firm floor under Odesa values.
  • Trade flow parity:Container freight rates on Asia-to-Europe routes have stabilized following post-peak cooling, keeping CIF landed calculations for Chinese hulled millet viable for German, Dutch, and UK specialty distributors.

Trading Outlook & 3-Day Price Indications (CN)

Over the next three trading days, we expect FOB Beijing millet prices to trade broadly sideways to slightly higher, while Ukrainian Odesa FCA/FOB levels are likely to stay stable with a firm undertone given ongoing Black Sea uncertainties.

  • Short-term view (next 3 days, CN FOB):With harvest conditions stable and no major policy or logistics shocks visible, CN hulled millet kernels FOB Beijing are expected to remain in a slightly firm and stable band around recent levels of 0.89–0.99 EUR/kg, with a mild upward bias for higher-spec organic product.
  • Exporters (CN):Consider selectively pricing nearby shipments at current levels to lock in modest gains, while keeping some volume unpriced in case Black Sea logistics tighten further and support a late-November premium.
  • Importers:For destinations able to lift from North China, current CN FOB values offer competitive coverage versus riskier Black Sea options. Staggering purchases over the coming weeks can mitigate volatility stemming from geopolitical events or freight spikes.
  • Risk factors to watch:Any escalation of attacks on Ukrainian ports, unexpected cold surges disrupting inland logistics in North China, or abrupt changes in Chinese feed demand could quickly shift the narrow price range now observed.
